Dear
As one of your constituents and a proud British-Romanian I am writing to request the introduction of an optional Romanian GCSE. Despite being the second most spoken foreign language in the UK, it is not one of the 20 foreign language GCSEs available in the UK education system.
Please could you write as soon as possible to the Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, and insist on our behalf that this anomaly is rectified. Without GCSE accreditation our school children (approximately 155 000) lack a vital incentive to hold onto their native Latin language (a brilliant gateway for other European languages). A GCSE would accord them the same recognition as other far smaller foreign national minorities.
To highlight the importance of a GCSE to the 1million-plus Romanian community in Britain, there was a very successful event held on 27 April in Boothroyd Room, Portcullis House, Westminster hosted by Gareth Thomas MP, the GCSE campaign group and the Romanian and Republic of Moldova Embassies. Cross party support included MPs Helen Hayes, Stella Creasy, Harriet Baldwin, Mark Sewards, Caroline Nokes, Nigel Huddleston and Tonia Antoniazzi.
Please visit the Romanian GCSE website with all the relevant links to see how important this is to our community.
Thank you very much for considering my request.
